Philosophy: a better Web
Although there are large desktop applications based on JavaScript (such as Mozilla, probably the best Web browser in the world), JavaScript is ignored by many developers, called a “toy language” which is “only suitable for image rollovers”.
We intend to prove this wrong. Despite its poor reputation, JavaScript is a fully featured programming language. The deficiencies it suffers of are due to compromises between language power and security.
We want to prove that the Web browsers can be much more than simple page viewers. We use JavaScript intensively, along with accompanying technologies such as XML, XHTML, CSS and DOM, in order to create the best user interfaces possible with actual browsers. We are prepared to jump into the future: SVG+JavaScript. But the future isn't near: the most popular Web browser in the world can hardly support DOM Level 1, a 6 years old technology; SVG is probably out of the question for the next 10 years or so.
Given the actual conditions (IE is still the big player), we have to stick to HTML. We believe that we do this better than anyone else—and we have projects that back this up: “The Coolest DHTML Calendar” and “HTMLArea 3.0” have already revolutioned the way people think UI.
We support Internet Explorer because of business reasons but we hate it for both ethical and technical reasons. We advocate against it, as we believe it's keeping the Web from evolving. We hope it'll die quick and painless and we dare you to help: use a better browser! As IE wastes territory, Web applications will be easier to develop—because other browsers stick to World accepted standards—and in consequence, development costs will be smaller and your experience better.
